Disney Dreamlight Valley Maui Guide

You’re welcome!

Learn of the heroic deeds and daring exploits of a demigod by unlocking Maui, Shapeshifter, Demigod of the Wind and Sea, Hero of Men and Women, and a character from Disney’s 2016 film Moana. Even though he has a huge ego, he’s actually rather helpful. This guide will help you unlock Maui and complete his friendship quests.

Unlocking Maui

To unlock Maui, you must first complete a few quests and have Moana move to Dreamlight Valley. If you need help with this, check out my guide on Unlocking Moana. When she’s settled, you’ll automatically receive the quest A Feast Worthy of A Demigod. You need to return to the Moana realm to check on Maui, who stands in his usual spot on the lush, elevated part of the island.

Maui is willing to go to Dreamlight Valley, but first he needs to make sure the food’s up to his standards and asks you to bring him three meals with at least a three-star rating. Here are some suggestions that require only grown or foraged ingredients from the Plaza, Peaceful Meadow, and Dazzle Beach:

After tasting your food, Maui agrees to visit the village, but he needs a place to stay. Place Maui’s Peaceful Grotto in an accessible part of the water on Dazzle Beach, and then have it built for 5,000 Star Coin icon Star Coins.

Maui’s Friendship Quests

For Maui’s friendship quests, you’ll be helping him recreate all the gifts he gave to mortals, but this time in Dreamlight Valley. The rewards include:

  • Three coconut trees that spawn on Dazzle Beach. Although there are fewer coconut trees than other fruit trees and berry bushes, you can always head back to the Moana realm for extra.
  • A pickaxe upgrade so you can break the large sea debris/coral on Dazzle Beach. (You receive the upgrade for small coral when unlocking Moana in their realm.)
  • Most importantly, a large limestone statue of Maui. Worry not, once you unlock the statue, you can order as many as you want from Scrooge’s store.

Burying the Eel

Prerequisites:

  • Maui Level 2

Maui realizes Dreamlight Valley is missing Coconut icon Coconuts, but he’s willing to help. When he created coconut palms before, he buried an eel in the ground to create them. Since you’ve yet to encounter any, you’ll need to talk to Goofy about it. He says you should collect:

  • 3 Worms – dug up near ponds in the Peaceful Meadow
  • 8 Softwood icon Softwood – the Plaza and Peaceful Meadow

When you have everything, craft a fishing trap and then use furniture mode to place it in the water near the dock on Dazzle Beach. Maui tells you to keep an eye on the trap. Simply return to the dock and fish in the orange ripples.

the character casts their line in orange ripples off the dock on Dazzle Beach, with the eel trap visible in the water

Bring the eel to Maui, who tells you to plant it on Dazzle Beach and tend to it until it grows into a coconut palm. Harvest the Coconut icon Coconut and bring it to Maui. With the quest complete, coconut trees will now grow naturally on Dazzle Beach, though you can move them wherever you’d like in Dreamlight Valley.

A Tale of Stone and Fire

Prerequisites:

  • Maui Level 4

Maui has found something stuck in one of the large pieces of sea debris on Dazzle Beach. Follow him to investigate. He wants to make your pickaxe stronger to break these bigger chunks, but first he needs Scraping Stones from his basket back in the Moana realm. The basket is next to Moana’s canoe.

the character points at a basket next to Moana's boat that contains Maui's scraping stones

While he works, he needs some fuel. Go cook him a five-star meal. If you have no other options, you can always cook Bouillabaisse using:

  • 2 of any Seafood
  • 1 Shrimp icon Shrimp – fished from blue ripples on Dazzle Beach; you might get Kingfish icon Kingfish instead if it’s nighttime (6 PM to 5 AM), so be patient or try to fish during the day
  • 1 Tomato icon Tomato – seeds purchased from Dazzle Beach
  • 1 of any Vegetable

Now that he’s been fed, Maui makes quick work of improving your pickaxe. Go back to the sea debris near the entrance to the Glade of Trust and break it open, revealing a broken sandstone.

Show it to Maui, who remembers that he brought fire to Dreamlight Valley before the Forgetting. He can do it again with your help. Collect the following:

  • 20 Sand icon Sand – dug up on Dazzle Beach or found when destroying sea debris
  • 25 Stone icon Stones
  • 10 Coal Ore icon Coal Ore
  • 3 Red Falling Penstemon icon Red Falling Penstemons – the Plaza

Craft the Granite Fire Bowl and place it anywhere in the village. With this quest complete, you can destroy all the unsightly sea debris dotting Dazzle Beach, and finally clear the bridge separating the biome!

Demigod of the Wind and Sun

Prerequisites:

  • Maui Level 7
  • Unlock WALL-E

Maui wants to craft kites and give them to villagers so they can enjoy the breeze he harnessed. You’ll need:

  • 18 Softwood icon Softwood – the Plaza or Peaceful Meadow
  • 30 Fiber icon Fiber – crafted using 6 Seaweed icon Seaweed total
the character crafts a kite with six softwood, ten fiber, and dark ink

Craft the three kites and then show them to Maui, who suggests you give them to Goofy, Merlin, and WALL-E. Gift the kites and then return to Maui, who remembers that the island behind Skull Rock was bigger before the Forgetting. He leads you to its location and notices something on the ocean floor. You fish it up, finding a chunk of limestone.

The Heart of Dreamlight Valley

Prerequisites:

  • Maui Level 10
  • Progress with Merlin (complete Crystal Mystery)
  • Unlock Forest of Valor, Frosted Heights, Forgotten Lands

Maui feels power flowing from the limestone, so he wants to crack it open to see what’s inside. Use the scraping stones he provides to clear off the crust at a crafting station and find a shard. Show it Maui, who recognizes it as a piece of the Heart of Dreamlight Valley, which was created by the previous ruler to protect the Dreamlight Castle.

The Heart used to be in the hand of the Mickey Mouse statue on the top floor of the Castle. Enter the Castle and ascend the stairs to find the other half of the Heart lying to the right of the fountain. Maui admits repairing the Heart is beyond his purview, so you ask Merlin, who says you need:

  • 3 Purified Night Shard icon Purified Night Shard – crafted using 15 Night Shard icon Night Shards and 3 Dream Shard icon Dream Shards total
  • Water from the Frosted Heights – along the river by the snow-covered rock bridge
  • Water from the Forgotten Lands – in the pond in the southeast corner of the biome

With the ingredients in hand, you can repair the Heart of Dreamlight Valley at a crafting station. The final step is to put the handy little protection gem back in the statue’s hand in the Dreamlight Castle. For all your help, Maui gives you… a statue of him. Better than nothing, I guess.
